What is the earliest I should plant my garden?

Many people begin planting their garden as soon as the weather allows them to work in it, but the frost-free date is officially May 15th in the Ozzie's local area. If you plant before May 15th, you're taking the chance of having your plants damaged or killed by a frost. Besides the higher risk of frost, most plants won't grow very quickly in the cool temperatures of early spring. Most likely, your plants will grow faster in our greenhouse during those early weeks of spring, so let us take care of them for you and give yourself a head start on your neighbor who plants too early! But if you just can't wait, Ozzie's will be open April 1st to help you satisfy those gardening urges.

Wondering who determines the frost-free date? It is determined by the federal government. NOAA's National Climatic Data Center produces maps which depict the likelihood of a frost across the United States. The "frost-free" date is not a guarantee that there will be no frost after that date- it means that there is only a 10% chance of frost after the frost-free date. If you want to be more certain to avoid frost, you might want to plant your garden even later.
